Развязка фильма – окончательное расставание старых супругов – потрясает и возмущает больше, чем откровенно трагический финал, каким могла бы стать, к примеру, смерть одного героя. Разлучение супругов, эта «смерть», которая безжалостней смерти, – подлинный сюжет фильма и, по сути своей, жуткое моральное порождение той пропасти, что разделяет и поколения. Текучесть, насыщенность и гениальная простота повествования, в котором виртуозность становится незаметной именно благодаря своему совершенству, превращают фильм в разговор на 2 голоса (голосами стариков), которые проникают прямо в сердце зрителя, минуя разум. Каждая сцена соткана из последовательности мельчайших деталей, обладающих чудодейственной силой, отражающих и усиливающих неотвратимость судьбы главных героев: все, что бы они ни делали (ведь несмотря на то, что они в высшей степени симпатичны, они далеко не святые), оборачивается против них и с каждой минутой приближает финальное расставание, завершающее фильм. В этом полотне, сотканном из отдельных деталей, узнается талантливейший шут-импровизатор, каким был Маккэри во времена немого кино. Его особенный талант вынуждает нас словно под микроскопом разглядывать реакции персонажей, и именно эта постепенно крепнущая родственная связь с ними делает развязку столь мучительной.Маккэри сохранил верность своим эстетическим методам, но нарушил одно из правил, установленных им для себя: он хотел, чтобы на его фильмах люди смеялись и плакали, чтобы эти фильмы рассказывали истории, а зритель, выходя из кинотеатра, был счастливее, чем перед сеансом.
